PRAIRIE MADNESS

Building on the success of WIND I: A PRELUDE TO PRAIRIE MADNESS, the Encounter company presents a new blend of theatrical design and physical performance.

PRAIRIE MADNESS draws on the experiences – real and imagined – of settlers on the Canadian prairies just before the turn of the 20th century. Uprooted from their countries of origin, isolated on discrete homesteads, without ready access to transportation or communication,  disturbing accounts of “prairie fever” began to emerge, with many citing the unrelenting sound of the wind as the final straw in a battle against the unforgiving elements.

This completely new, collaboratively created work explores the harsh, isolation of the prairie landscape, the nature of loneliness, and – of course – the wind, bringing the power of this elemental force into the theatre, creating an experiential live-performance space.

PRAIRIE MADNESS was presented as part of the Inaugural STRANGER FEST
